Github Universe 2024 - Join The Fold

At GitHub Universe, we worked with Tinsel, Puppy love, and GitHub to create "Join the Fold", an interactive installation designed to capture real-time audience input and transform it into a collaborative digital experience.

Attendees were invited to answer a series of curated questions via an interactive survey. Their responses dynamically customized a virtual hot air balloon, representing their unique contributions to the GitHub ecosystem.

As soon as they submitted their answers, their personalized balloon took flight, joining hundreds of others on a massive projection of the San Francisco Bay. The result? A constantly evolving, data-driven artwork, symbolizing GitHub’s ever-growing global community.

Key Features:

  • Real-time participation – Each guest's responses immediately generated a unique hot air balloon, creating an ever-changing skyline.

  • Data meets design – The balloon colors and patterns were determined by individual survey answers, making each one unique.

  • Community-driven visualization – The projection space evolved over time, reflecting the diverse voices and ideas of GitHub Universe attendees.

  • Live moderation – Responses were collected and displayed using a custom-built, secure interface, allowing GitHub’s research team to review and curate insights.

Impact:

  • Encouraged meaningful participation – Guests became active contributors to an evolving digital experience.

  • Blended data & art – The installation turned raw survey data into an elegant, interactive visual piece.

  • Gathered valuable insights – The research team gained real-time audience feedback in an engaging, non-intrusive way.

"Join the Fold" turned audience engagement into an immersive, data-driven spectacle—bridging the gap between technology, storytelling, and visual art.
